NOTLEYS LANDING / BIG SUR COAST, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. One of the most striking historic sites along Highway 1 can be seen from the road, but it is not a public pull-off or a place where visitors can simply walk up to the buildings. Point Sur State Historic Park, south of the Notleys Landing area on the Big Sur coast, is accessible to the public only through guided tours, according to California State Parks. Travelers should not confuse a roadside view of the volcanic headland with permission to enter the lightstation.

This is particularly important for south-coast households, visiting relatives and travelers returning after the 2026 Timber and Plaskett fires. State Parks maintains an official park page with standard tour information, but individual outings can change or be canceled because of weather, road conditions or emergency restrictions. Check the park and tour organizers before setting off; this guide is not a guarantee that a particular tour will operate.

Two historic places, two different tours

The Point Sur Lightstation stands on a volcanic rock rising approximately 361 feet above the surrounding coast. Its beacon was first lit August 1, 1889. Lighthouse keepers and their families lived at the isolated station until it was automated in 1974. The buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and continue to be cared for through restoration work by State Parks staff and volunteers.

Nearby, a second institution tells a different chapter of local history. The former Point Sur Naval Facility (NAVFAC) opened in 1958 as part of a Cold War-era underwater listening network used to track Soviet submarines. Much of the site was transferred to California State Parks in 2000. A NAVFAC tour is not the same thing as a lighthouse tour: visitors meet at a different gate and follow a different route.

What the official visitor guide lists

As displayed on the California State Parks information page checked October 30, 2026, standard lightstation walking tours are described as approximately three hours, traditionally offered Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Sunday at 10 a.m., and Wednesday at 1 p.m. The posted regular admission is $20 for adults, $10 for ages 6–17 and free for ages five and under. That is the park’s published regular schedule, not a verified booking for any upcoming day.

For the former Naval Facility, the park lists guided visits of about two hours, ordinarily Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m., with posted admission of $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6–17 and free entry for younger children. The two sites have distinct meeting points on the west side of Highway 1, roughly 19 miles south of Rio Road in Carmel. Follow the park’s directions rather than entering a private driveway or trying to reach the buildings by an informal trail.

State Parks says these tours are typically first come, first served, without advance reservations, and advises arriving about 30 minutes early because capacity is limited. Confirm times and operating status at the official Point Sur State Historic Park visitor page, or call the listed park number, (831) 625-4419. Visit the Point Sur tour organization for any day-specific advisories; the external organizer’s website could not be independently reached during this check.

Can everyone do the climb?

The lighthouse walking tour gains approximately 360 feet in elevation over steep, exposed ground and includes two stairways, the longer of which has 61 steps. It is not equivalent to the comparatively level Naval Facility tour. The park does not allow dogs on site, and the historic headland should not be treated as an unrestricted beach-access point. Visitors with mobility needs should ask park staff in advance about potential accommodation and the accessibility limitations of the historic buildings.

Why this matters for coastal communities

The Notleys Landing–Big Sur corridor has relatively few public entry points, limited roadside parking, and a history of landslides, wildfire closures and construction delays. For local residents hosting guests, checking the status of a tour beforehand may prevent a needless drive and unsafe roadside stopping. Highway 1 conditions can change separately from the park’s tour program; use Caltrans QuickMap and any posted emergency orders as well as the park’s own page.

The lighthouse is also a reminder that the Big Sur coastline holds more than scenic viewpoints. The maritime station links the area to 19th-century coastal navigation, while the former NAVFAC records the region’s less visible Cold War history. Both depend on volunteers, interpretation and careful management of fragile historic places.
