NOTLEYS LANDING, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. Drivers approaching the Big Sur coast from Carmel should allow extra flexibility near Rocky Creek Bridge. In a Highway 1 conditions bulletin timestamped 8:59 a.m. on October 29, Caltrans listed 24-hour one-way controlled traffic at Rocky Creek Bridge, approximately 15.7 miles south of Monterey, with the restriction scheduled through 6 a.m. November 30, 2026 due to construction.
This is an important local distinction: one-way controlled traffic does not mean the highway is fully shut. Motorists may be held and released alternately by traffic controls. The bulletin does not provide a specific delay estimate at this location. Drivers should not invent a predictable wait time from the November 30 end date, either: crews can finish earlier, weather can intervene, and the operating schedule may be changed.
Another construction zone along the Big Sur corridor
In the same report, Caltrans separately lists one-way controlled traffic at various locations extending from about 7.5 miles north of Point Sur Lighthouse to 8.4 miles north of Big Sur. Its published timeframe says 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through 7 a.m. December 31, 2026. This is a notice of traffic-control locations within a described stretch, not an announcement that the full length of the corridor will be reduced to one lane continuously.
Farther down the coast, Caltrans lists an independent Mud Creek one-way traffic-control window from 6:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, through November 13, for emergency work. The Mud Creek item is already covered in a separate California58 report; it should not be mistaken for the Rocky Creek Bridge construction notice.
What local residents and visitors should do
The practical route between Notleys Landing, the Palo Colorado neighborhood, Carmel and southern Big Sur is Highway 1. Along a road with limited alternative connections, even short, temporary delays matter for appointments, work trips and deliveries. Anyone making a time-sensitive journey should review the official Caltrans Highway 1 conditions page or the live Caltrans QuickMap shortly before leaving. For recorded road information, Caltrans also provides 1-800-427-7623.
Visitors stopping near a scenic overlook should not park where a work zone, narrow shoulder, cones or signs prohibit stopping. Keep gates and work access unobstructed, and follow flaggers even if a mapping application incorrectly indicates the road is open without restrictions. A closure on a connecting forest road is a separate matter from Highway 1’s mainline status.
What is known — and what is not
California58 has verified the published Caltrans advisory, not personally observed the traffic operation at Rocky Creek Bridge at every hour. The agency’s report establishes a listed restriction and intended end date; it does not establish actual construction progress, exact lane-by-lane traffic volumes or a current wait time. When additional agency bulletins change these details, this article should be updated rather than duplicated.
